“Fragments of Hospitality” is a project that experiments the artistic expressions based on social minorities. Since 2020, the project has collected individual fragments of the diverse participants around the keyword, “hospitality.” In “Fragments of Hospitality #000” 19 participants including the organizers collect new fragments with the keywords, “human, technology, and environment.” In this project, we hope that we will be able to choose for ourselves the “nature and attitude” of the media that mediates our connection. Hence, we created the web platform, in which the fragments are collected, on our own in a manner that could be as distant as possible from the great power that takes control of us. Most of us are categorized as artists, yet we are also those who have never received any formal art education, who do not define themselves as “artist,” who have continued to create something that is considered somewhat odd or strange, or even those who have never created anything up until now. The reason we have gathered here is to question the notion of art and imagine something of the future.

Story Behind the Design of Fragments of Hospitality
In an academic paper on “snow crystals”, Dr. Ukichiro Nakaya presents years of his observation pertaining to how and in what forms the snow crystals are formed. Contrary to the common understanding that they only take a couple of forms, snow crystals actually assume numerous forms depending on climate, temperature, and region. The fact that white snow crystals that come to us on a dark winter night as if they are giving us hospitality, in fact, reveal such diverse types and shapes, seems to fit right into our “fragments of hospitality” project. Like Dr. Nakaya, inspired by the work done by various artists and participants, we draw forms that have become abstract. Eventually, those fragments would diversify to have emotions, glitter like the snow crystals, or become mixed together and turn into water.
Methods of connection
Individuals collecting fragments each have their own folder. When they put a story, picture, audio, or video file inside a folder, each fragment is assigned a serial number, and gets accumulated in the fragments of hospitality website.The fragments connect us.
We hope that we can choose the “nature and attitude” of the medium that mediates our connection.

[환대의 조각들]은 사회적 소수자와 소수성을 기반으로 하는 예술 표현을 온오프라인 공간을 통해 실험하는 프로젝트다. 2020년부터 다양한 참여작가들과 함께 '환대'라는 키워드로 각자의 조각들을 모으는 작업을 해왔다. [환대의 조각들 #000]에서는 기획자들 개인을 포함한 19명의 참여자들이 ‘인간, 기술, 환경’이라는 키워드로 새로운 조각을 모은다. 이 프로젝트에서 우리는 우리의 연결을 매개하는 매체의 ‘성질과 태도’를 스스로 선택할 수 있기를 바란다. 따라서 우리의 조각들이 모이는 웹 플랫폼은 우리를 컨트롤 하는 커다란 권력으로부터 가능한 한 멀어지는 방식으로 스스로 제작한다. 우리는 대부분 예술인으로 분류되지만 정규 예술교육을 받지 않았거나 본인을 '예술인'으로 규정하지 않거나 조금 이상해보이는 창작을 지속해온 사람들, 혹은 한번도 창작을 해보지 않은 사람들이기도 하다. 우리가 이렇게 함께 모인 것은 예술이라는 개념에 질문을 던지고 미래의 무언가를 상상하기 위해서다.

환대의 조각들 디자인 이야기
나카야 우키치로 박사의 ‘눈(snow crystals)’에 대한 학술 논문에는 눈의 결정이 어떠한 형태들로 어떻게 형성되고
그 형태들을 몇년에 걸쳐 관찰한 기록의 결과물이 실려있다. 흔히 한 두가지의 단편적인 형태로 이해하고 있던 눈의 결정은
사실 기후와 온도, 지역마다 수없이 다양한 형태를 띠고 있다. 어두운 겨울 밤에 항상 환하게 우리를 환대해주는
새하얀 눈송이들이 현미경으로 봤을 때 이렇게 다양한 유형과 형태를 가지고 있다는 사실이 ‘환대의 조각들’ 프로젝트와
꼭 들어맞는다. 다양한 눈의 결정을 관찰하며 그리던 나카야 우키치로 박사처럼 다양한 작가들과 작업에 영감을 받아
추상화된 조각들을 그린다. 그리고 그 조각들은 점점 다양해져 감정을 갖기도 하고, 눈의 결정처럼 빛나다가 뒤섞여 물로 변하기도 한다.
연결의 방향
환대의 조각들을 모으고 있는 개인은 자기만의 폴더를 가지고 있다. 각자의 이야기, 그림, 소리, 영상 파일을 하나씩 폴더에 넣으면, 각각의 조각은 일련의 번호를 부여받고, 환대의 조각들 페이지에 차곡히 쌓인다. 조각들이 우리를 연결한다.
우리의 연결을 매개하는 매체의 ‘성질과 태도'를 우리가 선택할 수 있으면 좋겠다.
